Sleep Apnea Treatment
Does your snoring keep you or a loved one awake at night? Do you wake up suddenly or feel sleepy during the day? Have you ever awakened in the night feeling short of breath? Snoring and sleepiness are common symptoms of sleep apnea. If left untreated, sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and can lead to strokes and other serious consequences.
Physicians sometimes recommend surgery to correct this problem. But this surgery is particularly painful and expensive. Another common treatment is a CPAP device. But a CPAP is very uncomfortable, and many patients decide to deal with the risks of sleep apnea rather than put up with it.
There is a simpler solution that is often completely effective, and that is a mandibular advancement appliance. Dr. Arthur Chal, our experienced dentist, has been thoroughly trained in treating sleep apnea with this appliance, and recommends the SomnoDent appliance. The appliance works, is completely safe, and you simply have to wear it while you sleep.
Sleep Apnea Explained
When you fall asleep your whole body is in a relaxed state and that includes the tongue and soft tissues in your throat. Snoring results when the tissues vibrate and the tongue impinges the airway.
If you have sleep apnea, the tongue completely blocks the air passageway. You can see this illustrated in the diagram shown to the right. When this blockage occurs, you can suffer from oxygen deprivation causing you to awake abruptly. Many people were very surprised to learn that their sleep cycle was interrupted so frequently. In some cases, a sleep study revealed that disruptions took place hundreds of times during the course of a night.
Individuals that suffer from mild to moderate apnea do not wake up feeling refreshed and deal with ongoing fatigue. Other health risks include weight gain, high blood pressure, and a higher risk for heart disease. Depression has also been linked to individuals with sleeping disorders.
Treating Sleep Apnea With the SomnoDent Appliance
If your physician has diagnosed you with sleep apnea, he or she can write a prescription for this device and Dr. Chal can simply and effectively treat you without surgery. The SomnoDent appliance is a very comfortable appliance that is worn at night. If you don’t have a regular physician or for some reason you can’t get a prescription, we can have you visit our sleep center where you can be properly diagnosed and a prescription can be written.
Dr. Chal has found that the SomnoDent is an excellent solution. It safely repositions your jaw to ensure that your breathing passage remains open during sleep. It has a very high success rate and will likely greatly reduce the breathing obstructions or eliminate them altogether.
Shown at the right is an example of the SomnoDent Flex appliance. It is made from the SMH BFlex material designed for a snug and comfortable fit. You can expect that this appliance will last for approximately three to five years.
