The Qualifications of a Dental Expert Witness: Part Two
The evaluation and testimony of a top dental expert witness can often determine the outcome of a medical malpractice suit in which the plaintiff alleges a breach in the standard of care. Dr. Arthur Chal, our skilled dentist, routinely serves as a dental expert witness due to his extensive experience, professional reputation, commitment to integrity, and several other factors that allow him to stand out from other potential experts. In the conclusion of our two-part blog series, we will discuss two additional qualifications that help to make a dental professional the right choice for this appointment.
Committed to Continuing Education
In our last post, we mentioned how essential it can be for a dental expert witness to be currently practicing in the field, as this allows him or her to be aware of the changes in the standards of care over time. But to stay apprised of these updates, one also must be committed to continuing education, taking courses that offer instruction on the latest techniques, treatments, and materials available. While the majority of state dental boards require approximately 15 to 20 hours of educational courses per year, Dr. Chal strongly believes this is insufficient. He routinely attends over 100 hours of continuing education courses annually, and he maintains an updated list of classes he’s completed over the years.
Service on Examining Boards
Another variable that many attorneys and medical professionals will search for in a suitable witness is whether the individual has ever served on examining boards. The members of these accrediting and licensing boards, considered experts in the field, help to determine which applicants will be capable of successfully performing the challenging and serious duties involved in practicing modern dentistry. Dr. Chal is one of only three examiners who have served on the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry (ABCD) for over 15 years.
While Dr. Chal sincerely hopes that a patient will never have the need to litigate over dental treatment, he understands the importance of having a highly trained professional with integrity provide testimony when an unfortunate situation arises.
