Framework and Veneer Structure

We have several pages of highly worthwhile information on zirconia crowns and veneers. After you're through with this page, click here for the next page, on the CAD-CAM technology used to create these restorations. Or go to the menu at the bottom of the page to find a specific subject in which you are interested.

Zeno uses a ceramic framework plus a veneering ceramic for optimum performance and appearance

With the Zeno Tec system, there is a framework made out of zirconium oxide. This framework, or coping, is so strong, it exceeds some metals in tensile strength and is called "ceramic steel."

Dr. Chal's master ceramist then covers this coping with beautiful Noritake ceramic. He carefully matches this veneer to the shade and translucency of your neighboring teeth. He also customizes the occlusion and abrasion characteristics needed for your mouth, in order to create the most esthetic and biocompatible restoration possible. Dr. Chal works with master ceramist Rick Durkee, CDT, AAACD, who is highly artistic and extremely skilled in manipulating these materials.

The result is that the restoration will be indistinguishable and may perform even better than natural teeth. This veneering ceramic is especially formulated to be softer than the supporting substructure in order to avoid abrading the opposing natural teeth. Abrasion of opposing teeth is a common problem with other ceramics.

An example of a zirconium oxide frameworkThis is what the framework looks like in a long-span bridge. It is a translucent white and extremely strong. Almost any other ceramic would crack if it were used in a long-span application like this.

The finished Zeno ten-unit anterior bridgeThis shows the framework after it has been veneered with the softer, very natural-appearing veneer ceramic, making it very difficult, even up close, to distinguish the restoration from natural teeth.
