Removable Dentures

There are several options for types of removable dentures that can be made over dental implants.

If you are missing all your teeth, it is important to have dental implants placed. Otherwise, you will end up suffering from facial collapse as the jawbone gradually shrinks. Click the link to read more about facial collapse. Don't let this happen to you.

The best option, if you are missing all your teeth and you have sufficient bone of high enough quality, is to have full dental implants placed with crown and bridgework placed over them. However, there are other acceptable options that are less costly. If you come see Dr. Chal, he will explain all of your options and answer all your questions about them.

The simplest option is to have an implant overdenture. But Dr. Chal prefers the snap-on denture, which is the same cost, since it also involves placing two implants, but it is more secure and more comfortable.

At the right is a photograph of a snap-on complete denture.

A removable bridge, pictured at the right, is an upgrade from the snap-on denture. With this option, six implants are placed in each arch, with a bar connecting them, and the teeth are fastened to the bar. Costs are roughly proportional to the number of implants, so this option will cost more than the snap-on denture. But if your case involves replacing upper teeth, you will like the fact that there will be no need, with this option, for a plate to cover your palate. The plate covering your palate does interfere with tasting of food and requires adjustment when speaking.

A removable bridge has some similarities to a denture.

Denture/Implant Hybrids are another choice, and are an upgrade from a removable bridge. A hybrid replaces teeth and also missing gum and bone tissue. Fixed hybrids have eight to ten implants, and removable hybrids have fewer.

The picture on the right is of a fixed hybrid.

Another option is a fixed or removable hybrid denture.
